Fall is here, and it’s time for sportsmen head out into the woods in search of big game. If you’ll be hunting this fall, ask yourself this question – is your truck ready for the season? It’s easy to get caught up in preparing your weapons and gear for hunting season, but ultimately, you’ll still need to rely on your vehicle to get you to your hunting spot.
In this installment of the SORS blog, we’ll be looking at three essential upgrades that all sportsmen need on their trucks. These upgrades are not only great for getting you to your hunting grounds, but are also perfect for all other kinds of off-roading, and will keep you on the road when inclement weather comes this winter.
1. LEVELING KIT
Chances are good that if you’re heading out to WMA lands this fall to hunt, you’ll be doing some light off-roading as well. If that’s the case, you’ll want some additional ground clearance over what your vehicle has stock. If heavy rains come this fall, you’ll be dealing with wash-outs and ditches across any gravel and dirt paths as well.
Our solution to navigating these conditions is a leveling kit. Leveling kits raise the front of your truck up to be parallel with the rear, giving you a few inches of additional ground clearance in the front. A level also allows you to run slightly larger tires than stock in most cases, which is helpful for running upgraded all-terrain tires – leading us to our next point…
2. ALL-TERRAIN TIRES
With their aggressive treads and superior tread design, all-terrain tires make excellent choices for this sort of light off-roading. Since they are designed for averse, off-road conditions like mud, sand, and loose dirt, they offer superior traction over typical all-season tires. Our picks for all-terrain tires are the Toyo Open Country A/T3, the Yokohama Geolander X-AT, and the Nitto Ridge Grappler. All of which combine all the best features of all-terrain and mud terrain tires into a stellar hybrid design.
3. AUXILIARY LIGHTING
Lighting can be a huge help on those early mornings when you head to your tree stand before the sunrises. A light bar out front and reverse lights out back will help you find your way on service roads. Furthermore, illuminating your bed with LED pod lights makes loading up gear from your truck bed a breeze. Our pick for auxiliary lighting is RIGID Industries. A 30” SR Series LED light bar should offer plenty of light to illuminate even the darkest woods in the early morning – pair that with Rigid A-series lights in the bed and SR-Q back-up lights, and you’ll never have an issue with visibility again.
